The hotly contested accolade is based on reviews and opinions from millions of travellers on TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, as part of their Travellers’ Choice Awards for 2012. 

It also beat popular destinations such as Cancun in Mexico, Miami Beach in Florida and Honolulu in Hawaii to be named the fifth best beach in the world.
